The Bernese Mountain Dog

      The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large sennenhund-type dog from the Swiss alps. They are known for being good-natured and quite mellow and make excellent family dogs. They are related to Roman Mastiffs and were historically bred to accompany alpine herders and dairy-men.

Temperament

 The Bernese Mountain Dog has quite a mellow temperament, making them excellent to be around small children and even other pets with proper training. Affectionately called “Berners”, this breed is very intelligent, and quite easy to train. Due to being so openhearted, however, their feelings can easily be hurt, so harsh mannerisms and corrections do not work well on them. On that note, Berners don’t do well when left on their own for long periods of time due to their affectionate and eager-to-please nature.

Grooming and Exercise

The Bernese Mountain Dog has a double coat: a long outer coat, and a fluffy undercoat. This breed does shed, so it is best to brush out their coats once or twice a week to get out any loose hair. Berners need at least half an hour of moderate exercise per day. Some great forms of exercise are hiking or going on a run.

Health Conditions

Compared to other breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog has minimal common health conditions that should be cause for concern. A few of these possible health conditions include: canine hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and histiocytosis.
